One of the most powerful features of LiFePO4 energy storage is the ability to parallel connect multiple battery units. Whether you are starting with 5kWh and planning to expand, or deploying a large multi-unit system from day one, understanding parallel operation is critical.
Why Parallel Connect Batteries?
Parallel connection allows you to increase total capacity without replacing existing equipment. Start with one 5kWh wall-mounted unit, then add identical units as your energy needs grow — up to 15 units in parallel with BESTAR systems, achieving 75kWh total capacity.
Parallel Connection Requirements
1. Use Identical Battery Models
All batteries in a parallel bank must be the same model, voltage, and capacity. Mixing different models can cause imbalance and reduce system lifespan.
2. Proper Cabling
Use equal-length positive and negative cables from each battery to a common busbar. This ensures current flows evenly across all units. Cable gauge must be sized for the total system current.
3. DIP Switch Addressing
BESTAR batteries use DIP switches for address configuration. The master battery is set to address 1, and each slave gets a unique address (2, 3, 4…). The BMS automatically manages charging and discharging across the bank.
4. Communication Wiring
Connect batteries in a daisy-chain using the provided RJ45 communication cables. The master battery connects to the inverter via CAN bus. Only the master communicates with the inverter — slaves talk to the master.
Capacity Expansion: Wall-Mounted vs Stackable
Wall-mounted units (5kWh–10kWh each) can be paralleled up to 15 units. Stackable all-in-one systems offer modular expansion — simply stack additional battery modules on the base unit. Both methods are fully supported and user-serviceable.
Safety Considerations
Always install a DC circuit breaker between the battery bank and the inverter. BESTAR recommends a 125A breaker for systems up to 30kWh. Ensure all connections are torqued to specification and protected from moisture.
